antispameurope: "Record decrease in spam"

A spam filter is still indispensable

Hanover, 20/5/2011 – Since antispameurope began releasing spam statistics, the cloud security specialist has never had such low spam rates. While the proportion of spam messages and undesired emails in May 2007 was at just under 29:1, that number has now sunken to 6.4:1 in April 2011. Accordingly, the absolute number of spam emails sent to every inbox is lower than ever. The total amount of spam compared to desired emails at 89.5 percent (average of 2011) is still high however.

In April, the spam rate was thus at its lowest since the end of 2007. Spam filters are still indispensable: for every user in this period, on average, close to 900 emails were classified by the filters as undesired messages and rejected. In addition to that, emails are again increasingly being used to spread viruses.

“The shutdown of various botnets such as the Rustock botnet recently, surely has contributed to the decrease in spam”, Oliver Dehning, managing director of antispameurope explains. “However we cannot allow ourselves to be blinded. The increased sending of viruses reflects attempts to set up new botnets.” Only one thing is for sure: the spam issue will continue to keep IT personnel busy in the years to come.
