Trojan attack via mail - e-mail containing supposed package notification from DHL

Strong increase of emails containing supposed package notification from DHL

Hanover, Germany, March 28, 2011 - antispameurope reports an attack with spam emails. The subject of the spam email containing a Trojan virus refers to a supposed notification from the logistic company DHL. The actual text of the email advises the alleged package recipient of further information regarding the package itself as well as the tracking number, which can be found in the attached file.

These ZIP files can have different names: United Parcel Service Notification Letter, UPS document, UPS notification, UPS tracking number or DHL_tracking. If the user opens these files, a Trojan will be automatically installed on the user’s PC. As things are now, not all virus scanners can detect all of these malware versions yet.

“Again it seems that spammers have been successful in introducing malware via mass spam emails”, says Olaf Petry, Director of IT at antispameurope. “Their objective is not necessarily the content of the email itself, but rather the hope that the recipient will open the attachment without even reading the email. If a recipient took the time to actually read the email, which is riddled with spelling errors, he or she should become suspicious right away. Furthermore, logistic companies always include the tracking link in the body of the email. Under no circumstances should the recipient open the attachment!”
